It is extremely significant and important that the NCSS position statement includes that becoming an effective citizen includes challenging injustices. Just as the article stated, multicultural education truly is a way to provide students with an accurate history of their world, and to prepare them with the skills necessary to become critical decision makers. I would also like to offer a revised solution to the ways in which the article proposes a multicultural education approach. As I read the article by Guichun Zong, Jesus Garcia, and Angene Wilson, I became concerned with some of the methods that were suggested for teaching strategies, as some conflicted with information I have received in my class. Cloud State University in Minnesota and am taking a class in Human Relations for Teachers. As I was researching multicultural education curriculum in United States public schools, I came across an article from your SOCIAL EDUCATION journal titled, "Multicultural Education in Social Studies," from the November/December 2002 issue.

I would recommend this book to someone who loves to laugh. Finally, they see a beautiful, amazing starry night. One time, I had to wait for a toy for my birthday, and I felt like I couldn’t wait! In the story, it gets dark and Gerald is starting to worry that they won’t be able to see the surprise. I think a lot of people can relate to this book because it’s hard to wait, especially when it’s a surprise. Gerald wants it right away, but Piggie tells him he has to wait. At the beginning, Piggie says she has a surprise for Gerald. Waiting Is Not Easy! is a hilarious story. Even though the books are always about the same two characters, Elephant and Piggie, they aren’t boring. Even though they have plain pictures, they are still great because the stories are so silly. I love Elephant and Piggie books because they are fun to read and they make me laugh. This is a high-rated indie book on Goodreads, and after reading it I see why! In my experience, this indie book reads closest to a traditionally published book. In my quest to read more self-published books, I clicked up (like picked up, but for digital books) a copy of Heart on a Chain by indie author Cindy C Bennett. Basically, I am just reviewing this book because I liked the book :) I receive no compensation for anyone purchasing the book from the above links. Full disclosure: I was not paid for this review, nor did I receive a free copy of the book in exchange for a review. Instead, many Jewish immigrants went to courthouses and Americanized their names themselves, as cited by thousands of court records.Īs a result, generations of Jewish people have done the emotional work of burying the anti-Semitic sentiment that has affected them. However, this story is untrue, Horn claims. The traditional story tells how Jewish immigrants arrived at Ellis Island and had their Jewish-sounding last names changed by workers. Horn provides a popular example of this among the American Jewish community through the story many descendants of Jewish immigrants have been told. Simply put, she said, “why do we honor Jews only when they lack agency?” Horn explains that Jewish people often feel the need to erase their Jewish identity in order to gain respect and make society more comfortable. Horn points out that the lack of action and ignorance surrounding current anti-Semitism does not align with the sympathy for murdered Holocaust victims. Horn started her talk by recognizing the point of Holocaust Remembrance Day, a Jewish holiday that is called Yom HaShoah in Hebrew. Her book was selected as the New York Times Notable Book of the Year and has attained worldwide recognition, as it has been translated into 25 languages. Dara Horn, a journalist best known for her book People Love Dead Jews, which encapsulates the problem of current anti-Semitism relating to Holocaust education in America, spoke on the flaws of Holocaust remembrance in regard to current anti-Semitism on April 18th in the Heights Room. This needed a good trimming by an editor.Īll in all, a fun non-fiction read for fall. The Machiavelli comparisons were good- and then overused. Things were repeated, points pounded and pounded- no use beating a dead horse. In addition, the book needed to be significantly shorter. The only reason I continued to plow through it, was because the writing was good and the story was interesting. To be honest, he sounded quite mechanical and like he should have given his nose a good blow before reading. I understand wanting to take ownership of your own writing by narrating it, but Holiday should never have taken this liberty. I listed to this on audio, which Holiday himself narrates. How did he manage to get all this information from each of his sources? I’d love to know. I loved the intricate details, the insider scoop, and the juicy info. The information is great and his comparisons to Machiavelli are brilliant. The information in this book is incredible, and the steps that were taken to destroy a media outlet (when strongly protected by the first amendment) are really intriguing. The calculated attack on Gawker by Thiel is brilliant and terrifying. He then devotes years of his life to its destruction and collapse. Peter Thiel, creator of PayPal, is outed by Gawker Media. When I first heard the summary of this book, I was fascinated. Some may remember the juicy celebrity news source “Gawker”, and its some of its sister sites such as Jezebel. My employer, a Parisian woman named Nadine, imparted instruction and philosophy over delicate tarts and gâteau opéra. “I worked there as a girl of 15 and have never forgotten the feeling of being around artfully-made pastry (and dashingly handsome waitstaff). “The seed for this book was sown long ago in a fancy French patisserie shop in Toronto,” explains Maclear. In her introduction to Julia, Child (Tundra, July), author Kyo Maclear notes that her story “should be taken with a grain of salt and perhaps even a generous pat of butter.” Rather than a true biographical account of the childhood of the beloved TV personality and author of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, this picture book aims to capture Julia Child’s energy and spirit through the story of two young friends who share a love of cooking. |
